Brewing Beer – Episode 3 (loosen up that malt and some pro tips!)

December 8th, 2008

In episode 3 of our series I start getting crazy with some video edits and homebrewing pro-tips (coming from someone doing things for practically the first time)…

We loosen up the malt extract and continue to ramble.

If you’re even contemplating brewing beer, I cannot recommend enough The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition

Brewing Beer – Episode 2 (adding the sock ‘o grain)

December 6th, 2008

In episode 2 of our new homebrewing series, I take an old dirty sock and add a bunch of malt to it and let it steep in the brew pot.

Follow along as the magic begins… :)

All hail the “Ale Pail”!

Brewing Beer – Episode 1 (it begins)

December 5th, 2008

After thinking about coming up with a new hobby, I decided to try making beer after a good 12 year hiatus (during my college days ~ which to be honest didn’t turn out so well ~ god, am I getting old!)…

I decided to document the process via video so I now present Episode 1 of my homebrewing escapade…

Malört Face

Malört Face

Originally uploaded by phil dokas.

Back in my college days, my friend Geno and I were on a Malört’s kick for a bit…

You say you’re not familiar with Malörts? Let me share with you what Wikipedia has to say about my favorite “Swedish style of schnapps”… :)

From the label of Jeppson’s Malört:

“Most first-time drinkers of Jeppson Malort reject our liquor. Its strong, sharp taste is not for everyone. Our liquor is rugged and unrelenting (even brutal) to the palate. During almost 60 years of American distribution, we found only 1 out of 49 men will drink Jeppson Malort. During the lifetime of our founder, Carl Jeppson was apt to say, ‘My Malort is produced for that unique group of drinkers who disdain light flavor or neutral spirits.’

It is not possible to forget our two-fisted liquor. The taste just lingers and lasts – seemingly forever. The first shot is hard to swallow! PERSERVERE [sic]. Make it past two ‘shock-glasses’ and with the third you could be ours…forever”

Perusing some of my RSS feeds today, I found a recent post by John Hodgman (one of my favorite authors and Apple Spokesmen) who pointed me to my new favorite Flickr Pool: Malört Face (snapshots of people reacting to tasting Malört’s for the first time)…

Perfect.

Follow-Ups:
- The A.V. Club does a taste test of Jeppson’s Malört

- Hodgman is a connoisseur

Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger

If I listen to “The Trapeze Swinger” one more time, my tear ducts may completely dehydrate me…

Status Report For Second Half of 2008 (thus far)

November 25th, 2008

So it’s been one of those years… You know them. The type that every time you blink your eyes it’s a new month. The type where weeks literally fly by and you wonder where all the time has gone. The kind where you wake up one morning and realize that you haven’t updated your website in MONTHS.

You then wonder, “what did I use to post about?”… Your mind struggles with potential blog posts but nothing seems to be interesting enough to hit the “publish” button…

But then…

You think to yourself, “I know! A list is always an easy way to get a post out! God knows I’ve relied on them before!” So without further ado, here goes… :)

What I’ve been reading:

- The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition(my new found hobby)

- The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable

- Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions(a book about what is referred to as “Behavioral Economics” ~ how Starbucks got people to start buying $4 coffees and other interesting topics about “why”)

- Just starting Anathem(already lost and I’m on the first page)

- Tons of white papers on CRM and it’s benefit in slow economies

What I’ve been doing:

- Working / traveling a lot over the last couple of months

- Volunteered at the Naper Settlement “All Hallows Eve” again (such a fun time!)

- Attended the Apple iPhone Tech Talk in Chicago

- Lost a little “green-ness” that I was known for over the last couple of years. I’m not saying anymore (in public) :)

- Decided to jump into the world of Homebrewing (hence the book selection above). Going to brew my first batch this coming weekend (a Sierra Nevada knock-off)

What I’ve been listening to:

- Ryan Adams – Cardinology

- Fleet Foxes

What I’ve been playing:

- FIFA Soccer 09 (best soccer game I’ve ever played)

- Shaun White Snowboarding (a must have if you have the Wii Fit Balance Board ~ super fun snowboarding game)

- Animal Crossing: City Folk (kind of dissapointed in this title as it’s pretty much a straight port from the Nintendo DS version ~ main benefit is the kids think it’s a cartoon when I’m playing it!) :)

Gary Vaynerchuk at Web 2.0

October 3rd, 2008

I have been following Gary Vaynerchuk for quite a while and the more that I read him / watch him, the more that I’m inspired….

“There is no reason in 2008 to do shit you hate…”

damn, i get fired up after watching this video… not kidding.

Sweet Berry Wine

September 19th, 2008

“Wine was invented by the Romans for orgies and orgies are not too much fun if no one wants to do with you”

Oh, man I’m laughing… :)

(and there’s more!)

What to write about when I’m not writing about anything

August 29th, 2008

I don’t want this to be the typical apologetic post that myself and every other blogger in the world (did I just lump myself into a group? oy!) write after you can count on one hand how many times someone has updated their site over the course of a year.

What I do want to say is that I really miss writing here and really need to kick myself in the behind to start creating some more content / media in my / about my life. I feel like this piece has been missing from my days lately and while I’ve been “so busy”, for some reason I haven’t had the motivation to fire up MarsEdit or login to WordPress to post something… Finally, rather than him-hawing about a post and what to write about, I figured why not just typing and so here I am.

It’s been a very busy summer as I’m sure it has been for you, my (still) loyal reader(s). We’ve been continuing to remodel rooms in our new house (been here just over a year now) and between a few vacations and the occasional business trip for work, I feel like I blinked once and the summer is now over.

Here’s hoping that the crisp air that is right around the corner motivates me to take things a bit slower, not feel so rushed, enjoy my family and maybe provide some encouragement to open up my blogging client and share a bit of what’s going on in my life or what I think is interesting with you, my (amazingly fantastic) loyal reader(s).

That wasn’t so hard! :)

and here’s a video of it…

July 26th, 2008

unfortunately not the version where Michael Stipe gives some background on the song (as mentioned below), but I’ll take some circa 1985 R.E.M. any day…
