What the consultant saw

Basically treat the employee’s laptop as you would treat the employees’s pants: require it, pay the employee enough to buy it, and provide the infrastructure that works with it, but that’s all. Give the employee the price of one laptop per two years, plus, say, the price of one major troubleshooting session per six months.

I would totally be rocking a new MacBook Pro if this were the case (and keep your money for the troubleshooting session and just buy me the AppleCare).

I’ve been really intrigued by this book and couldn’t pass up such a deal. Alright, you have 2 hours and 18 minutes to get it!

This even used to effect me when I was on summer break from school. I think my problem initially started with the awful television that was on Sunday nights while I was growing up. Back in the old days the worst was being stuck watching The George Michael Sports Machine since nothing else was on television late Sunday nights.

While reading my RSS feeds this morning (specifically kottke.org), I saw that I’m not the only one who feels this way. Finally, I’m normal! :)

“Rearming for the new week can produce anxiety and a sense of loss,” confirms psychologist Gary Hayes of the New York management consulting firm Hayes, Brunswick & Partners. It’s a result of the loss of momentary control that we gain on the weekend and then all but surrender during the workweek.

I’m always thinking of how I can “spruce” up my Sunday nights. Maybe that’s the perfect night to do my “much talked about yet nothing to show for” Podcast?

I think I need to go on a permanent vacation. That seems to be the only time I don’t care what day of the week it is.*

* – Unless, of course, it’s a Sunday and I’m flying back from Vegas

- Where are most people keeping that key as they are “going”?
- Is the receptionist keeping tabs as to how often I’m going?
- Better yet, is she keeping track of how long I’ve been gone? :)

I’m a firm believer that an office environment has a lot to do with a person’s creativity, drive and production. It should be a place where the employees can work productively without tripping over wires or worrying about running out of power outlets or network jacks. An office is not a place where people should dread going to every morning. And for all sakes, please don’t make it tan…

Joel has a brand new office that kicks ass.

He sums it up perfectly: “Hey, this is my job; this is where I spend my days; it’s my time away from my friends and family. It better be nice.”

I for one have personally been affected by the teeth grinding associated with work-related stress that was mentioned in the article and chipped my front tooth due to grinding my teeth at night… Wearing a mouth guard at night is no fun and I’ve had to do so for over a year now.

(I was just reading that post from way back that I mentioned above… I still need to get that T-Shirt I talked about back then… Just a note to myself…) :)
