I created an iMix of this year’s compilation (which includes everything besides “Twin Killers” since it was a live track) that is available on iTunes (link will open the iTunes Music Store).

People are sometimes amazed that someone who’s my age (not disclosing), married and has two kids has the time to put this together. All I have to say is that I buy a lot of music through the year and it’s pretty easy to just filter my most played songs that came out this year. With that said, I give you this year’s Compilation. 01.) “Unguided” – The New Pornographers
Easily my favorite album of the year. I could have picked any song and literally flipped a coin between “Unguided” and “Myriad Harbor”. Want a bonus for this year’s compilation? 02.) “Twin Killers” – Deerhoof
I first saw Deerhoof open for Wilco a few year’s back. I’ve really enjoyed their sound since. Earlier this year they released a free album that you could download from their site. This track, “Twin Killers”, was taken from the album. Looking around their site I can no longer find the link to download Choo Choo Choo, Beep Beep but definitely check out their album, The Runners Four since this is where “Twin Killers” was originally from.

03.) “Plasticities” – Andrew Bird
I like this song alot and the whole album is just as good. Definitely one of my favorite “finds” of 2007.

04.) “Plus Ones” – Okkervil River
Okkervil River made it’s debut to my yearly compilation back in 2005 when I first discovered them. I absolutely love the cleverness of this song and if you are any sort of music fan I think you’ll “get it”. :)

05.) “Intervention” – Arcade Fire
I first heard this song back a few years ago on a live album (I think). I have always enjoyed the Arcade Fire but I tend to forget about them (if that’s possible). Anyways, I think that “Intervention” is a very monumental-sounding song. Hence, it made the cut.

07.) “Must Be The Moon” – !!!
I first heard !!! (I believe it’s pronounced “Check Check Check”) on the KEXP Live Performances Podcast and loved the energy and rock/punk/dance sound that they have. I kick myself for passing on an opportunity that I had earlier this year to get a photo/press pass to a show of their’s at The Metro in Chicago. It was a weeknight and I hadn’t heard any of their music before. I definitely would have taken advantage if I had known. Next time. Also, this song will definitely make a playlist the day that I start running.

08.) “Past In Present” – Feist
I stole this from Liz as this was her CD. According to Maggie, Feist is “mommy music”. I know you heard “1 2 3 4″ and you know I can’t go that mainstream. Of course I always have to one-up Liz by telling her that I listened first (Feist is a member of Broken Social Scene). :)

09.) “Young Folks” – Peter Bjorn and John
See above. Stolen from Liz’s pile of music. I still like this song even though I heard it about two zillion times this year.

What’s a Marusin Compilation without Ryan Adams? Seeing that he puts out about 10 albums a year there’s always going to be a good chance that he’ll make the cut.

11.) “Safety Bricks” – Broken Social Scene Presents: Kevin Drew
I will not consider this “double-dipping” because of the Feist connection. Another one of my favorites from 2007.

12.) “Song Writes Itself” – Pela
As with !!!, I first heard Pela from the KEXP Live Performances Podcast. No I don’t just automatically take anything that I hear there and push it to the Compilation! There’s something about this band that I really really like and I think it has to do with their sound. They TOTALLY remind me of Emmet Swimming which holds a nostalgic place in my heart.

13.) “Jigsaw Falling Into Place” – Radiohead
Absolutely one of my favorite albums of the year and in my opinion one of Radiohead’s best since OK Computer. Yes, I said that. Oh, and I paid $10 for it and is worth every penny.

14.) “Us V Them” – LCD Soundsystem
Another track that is not normally associated with my sound. As with !!!, the day I am training for a marathon, this track will be in my playlist.

15.) “Side With The Seeds” – Wilco
As with Ryan Adams, anytime Wilco releases an album you’re pretty much guaranteed that a track will make the Compilation. This year, I had a tough choice between “Side With The Seeds” and “Impossible Germany”. Both good songs and a great album.

16.) “North Star” – Magnolia Electric Co.
Another “find” of mine this year. As you probably know by now, I kind of dig the twang and “North Star” totally delivers. This is usually the song that I am listening to when I’m walking from the train to the office each morning for some reason. The guitar riff between 00:38 and 00:43 is usually enough to get me going in the morning (with some coffee on the side).

17.) “We’re Not Alone” – Dinosaur Jr.
I rediscovered Dinosaur Jr. this year and remembered back to my college days and how much I loved them. Even though this album came out this year, it brings me right back to 1995 (and that’s actually a good thing sometimes).

I don’t know what that says about my music tastes. I’m somewhat annoyed. :)

They do say that all rock critics are failed musicians. I guess that is somewhat true in my case (although I’ve been rocking the keyboard/mic that Maggie got for Christmas)…

01.) “Pushover” – The Long Winters

There is one reason why I discovered The Long Winters this past year: driving a long distance to go to a meeting. You see, I was driving way out to what I consider past the furthest western suburb I can think of. I got to a point where my radio stopped picking up the radio station out of Chicago that I was listening to. I decided to flip on the iPod and see what I had to listen to but nothing sounded interesting. I decided to peruse some of the the recent downloads that had come through the KEXP Live Performances podcast and happened to pick a recent set that was recorded with The Long Winters. From about 30 seconds in, I was hooked by John Roderick’s witty banter with John Richards. Who knew that I would discover not only my favorite album of the year, but my favorite new band as well? I cannot say enough good things about The Long Winters. If you want a copy of the podcast that clinched things for me, let me know.

02.) “The View From The Afternoon” – Arctic Monkeys

I’m a sucker for British bands and The Arctic Monkeys (for however much hype they “had”) have been one of my favorite bands to come out of England in some time. The whole album is well worth picking up. I usually put this album on when I’m about to embark on a walk across The Loop after getting off the train. I’ve noticed it allows me to pick up my pace when I’m late to getting somewhere.

04.) “Wolf Like Me” – TV On The Radio

I’ve been a fan of TV on the Radio for a couple years now. I think the one guy in the band with the huge afro has the best hair in the music business. This whole album is pretty kick-ass, but “Wolf Like Me” is my favorite.

05.) “Steady As She Goes” – Mice Parade

I picked up this Mice Parade album for one reason, I was looking for something new to listen to. I remember distinctly that I was working from home on September 8th and was reading my usual RSS Feeds and discovered this post by Hugh MacLeod. I guess Hugh just doesn’t market wine and tailored suits? :) This is a fantastic chill album. Highly recommended.

06.) “O Valencia!” – The Decemberists

The Decemberists are a perrenial favorite at the Marusin household and this year’s album continues to impress. I know you’ve heard “O Valencia!” on the radio a zillion times (who listens to the radio anymore, though?), but it doesn’t make it a bad song.

07.) “Maria” – Paul Curreri

I discovered Paul Curreri while watching the man perform live in my friend, Rick’s basement. This was easily the most intimate and interesting concert I’ve ever been to. I cannot recommend Paul Curreri enough and if you ever get the chance to see him perform, without a doubt go. I cannot wait for the time when he makes it big and I can brag about where I saw him play… :)

08.) “Crazy” – Ray Lamontagne

Yes, “Crazy” was this years “Hey Ya” or “Gold Digger”. The version included is a bit different than the one that was crammed down your throats all year. I originally found this version of the song at Stereogum.com (the link has since been removed)…

09.) “Message To The Boys” – The Replacements

It’s amazing to be able to include The Replacements in a compilation. This isn’t their greatest song by any means. I just couldn’t pass on the opportunity to include them. A small piece of my heart resides in Minneapolis.

10.) “Please Come Back” – Catfish Haven

Here’s a local band (to Chicago) that I first heard about last year. If I’m not mistaken, this song was available as a free download from the iTunes Music Store and that really got them some cheap/free exposure. I still haven’t seen them but really need to. I love the gruffiness/lowfi sound of this track.

11.) “Conventional Wisdom” – Built To Spill

In my opinion, BTS is the comeback kid of the year. I have listened to them forever and this whole album is full of some amazing tracks by the band. I would love to be able to replicate the guitar sound in “Conventional Wisdom”.

12.) “Glad To Be Scattered” – Track a Tiger

Another Chicago band that I have never seen. I have no clue where I first hear of the band, but I do know I got hooked by the free downloads that they offer on their website. This pushed me to purchase the whole album and as with all of the other songs included on the compilation, it’s been in constant rotation (actually, I don’t think it has left “slot 2″ on the cd changer in my car ~ is that a sign of something good or laziness on my part?).

13.) “Listen Joe” – Golden Smog

One of my musical highlights this year was seeing Golden Smog at The Vic Theatre in Chicago. It was a perfectly sized crowd that filled the venue. No one was pushing and while it was crowded, there was enough room to maneuver around. I was up on the front rail with my friend Mark and we got to witness this Minneapolis supergroup (there’s that Minn. thing again!). With the show taking place in Chicago, there were rumors of Mr. Tweedy sitting in with the band and indeed he showed up. Fantastic show, but the highlight was the version of “Listen Joe” that Gary Louris (of The Jayhawks) and Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco ~ in case you didn’t know) did together during the encore. If I had a better recording of the show, this would have replaced the studio version.

15.) “Soba” – Benevento / Russo Duo

I didn’t get out to many concerts this past year, but did get the chance to see Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon perform with “The Duo”. I had never really heard the Benevento / Russo Duo before the show but was hooked immediately after their opening set. They closed the set with “Soba” and really got the crowd going. I absolutely LOVE the end of this song…

16.) “Kodo (Inside the Sun Remix)” – Yoshida Brothers

I (re-)fell in love with Nintendo again in 2006. If you read my site at all, I know you’re sick of me talking on and on about my Wii and DS. Sorry about that. This is the song from the Wii commercials that have been on the television for the last month or so. Our daughter Maggie loves this song so much that she threw up on Christmas Eve after bouncing around and dancing to this song. How could I not include it on this year’s compilation. :)

18.) “Sister Winter” – Sufjan Stevens

Sufjan Stevens is a perennial favorite on the Marusin Compilation. Over the course of the past several years, he has put out EPs of various Christmas/Holiday songs. They were always in limited supply and the majority of us had to resort to skimming the internet trying to find copies of them. Sufjan got smart and decided to package them all together (along with a brand new disc) and release them to the mass-market. “Sister Winter” is on the “new disc” included in the package and I thought that it was a perfect song to close out this year’s compilation.

09.) “He Lays In The Reins” – Calexico & Iron and Wine

What happens when two of my favorite artists get together, put out an EP and go on tour together? You get a great album and a show that I unfortunately had to miss… I love the addition of Salvador Duran during the second verse of this song. 12.) “Lay Low” – My Morning Jacket

My Morning Jacket made their debut on my 2003 compilation. Their latest album, “Z”, is a little different than their last but I have to say that I love it. I read somewhere that “Z” is MMJ’s “The Bends” and that only means that their next album will be their “OK Computer”… Let’s keep our fingers crossed. This album is my second favorite album of the year.

13.) “This Year” – Mountain Goats

Yes, the vocals are a bit nasil-y and my wife really isn’t a fan (and has a hard time deciphering between the Mountain Goats and Decemberists ~ although she “likes” The Decemberists… yeah, I don’t really understand either). Anyways, the thing I really like about this song (and most other Mountain Goats songs) is the bizarre stories told through the song and the obscurities that come out of the lyrics.

01.) “Take Me Out” – Franz Ferdinand

Yes, we all heard this song a million times this year. You know what? I still like the song and the album as a whole is fantastic and still in my rotation. Perfect song to open up the cd with.

03.) “Carl Perkins Cadillac” – Drive By Truckers

What a perfect song to kick back that PBR or High Life to. The Beautiful South is the best Drive By Truckers album to date and I can sense them being on the verge of becoming bigger than they already are. The whole album is fantastic and is one of those discs that everytime I listen to it, I wonder why I don’t listen more.

04.) “To Be Alone With You” – Sufjan Stevens

I have to thank Matt Gifford for getting me hooked on Sufjan Stevens. He is easily my favorite new artist that I discovered this year. Sufjan’s music is incredibly melodic, hypnotic and makes you want to learn to play the banjo. On a completely other layer, when you sit down and listen to the words of the songs, you quickly learn that he’s quite spiritual.

05.) “Palm Of Your Hand” – Cake

I’m a sucker for the band, Cake. While the album Pressure Chief isn’t their strongest album to date, I have to admit that “Palm Of Your Hand” is the best song off their newest release and the one that I listened to the most off this album. In my opinion, it’s much better than “No Phone” which they released as their first (and only) single.

06.) “Stuck In The Metal” – Eagles of Death Metal

Take a lot of fuzz and mix with the acoustics of your garage and you get Eagles of Death Metal. “Stuck In The Metal” is an alternate name for a tune I’m pretty sure you’re familiar with. I personally love every song on Peace Love and Death Metal and it was hard to pick one. I was going to go with “Kiss The Devil”, but decided that it wasn’t too Christmas-y. :) I have to award Peace Love and Death Metal with “Album Cover of the Year”.

07.) “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own” (Live) – U2

Ok, you can stop making fun now. Maybe it’s me getting older or something like that, but I really dig the latest U2 release, “How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb”. The album is pure U2 (yes, you know it’s The Edge playing guitar this time rather than synthesizers). “Sometime You Can’t Make It On Your Own” is my favorite song on the album. The version of the song that I included on this years compilation is actually a live version that they did at an album release party under the Brooklyn Bridge. This version is available from the iTunes Music Store and I highly recommend picking up the whole EP (great version of “I Will Follow”).

Tell me you don’t get goosebumps at the 3:22 mark of this version of “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own”.

09.) “Public Service Announcement” – Jay-Z + DJ Danger Mouse

What do you get when you mix black and white? Grey of course. A perfect name for DJ Danger Mouse’s mash-up of Jay-Z’s Black Album and The Beatles’ White Album. “Public Service Announcement” only touches on how clever DJ Danger Mouse’s work is. I highly suggest downloading the whole Grey Album to see what all the controversy was/is about.

10.) “The One Who Got Us Out” – Ted Leo & The Pharmacists

Ted Leo has been given the title of the “new Billy Bragg”. I can kind of see that. Power pop with a strong message at it’s finest. Another “on the verge” artist that you should try to catch while you can at a small venue.

11.) “Curiosity” – Jay Bennett

Jay Bennett made his debut on a Marusin Compilation back in 2002. Jay is an ex-member of Wilco and has been trying really hard to build himself up as a solo artist since he was asked to leave the band back in 2001. Listening to this song, I get the feeling that he wrote this song about his departure from Wilco. Probably as a bit of self-help.

12.) “It’s A Hit” – Rilo Kiley

There are no other bands like Rilo Kiley out there. I can’t think of many other bands that play as tightly as they do with such smart lyrics. I originally was going to include “Portions For Foxes” on this years compilation, but the song was probably a bit too racy for some of my audience. :)

“It’s A Hit” fits in well with this years compilation since it seems relevant with the 2004 Election outcome.

13.) “Unmade Bed” – Sonic Youth

I’ve been listening to Sonic Youth for at least half my life and I can honestly say that Sonic Nurse is one of their best albums to date. “Unmade Bed” is one of the songs that has stuck out from the album. I think this song is one of the most “user-friendly” Sonic Youth songs that I’ve heard. It has just enough noise/Thurston Moore to give you a taste of the band, but has enough melody to not turn away the casual listener.

The Pixies have returned and damn it if “Bam Thwok” isn’t the catchiest freaking song that they’ve ever put out (ok, “Here comes your man” is right up there, but…). I have not been able to get this song out of my head all year long and now I can share my agony with you.

What can I say, I’m a sucker for bands with “a look”. Combine matching outfits along with a couple mustaches and you have a band that I’m very intrigued by. Add the fact that they are kick-ass musicians and you have a band that is going to make my year-end compilation.

19.) “Float On” – Modest Mouse

Some may say that it’s 2004′s “Hey Ya”. While we’ve heard “Float On” alot this year, there’s no arguing with the fact that it’s a great song and has finally brought Modest Mouse the deserved credit that they have finally received. Most of you OC fans probably don’t realize that Modest Mouse has been around for years.

20.) “Theologians” – Wilco

What can I say, I can’t get enough Wilco. I’ve yet to tire of A Ghost Is Born and it’s probably on it’s 1000th go around on my iPod. “Theologians” is one of the standout tracks in my opinion. Definitely my album of the year. “I’m a cherry ghost”
