Trying to Venture Into Chumby Development

So I got my Chumby a week or two back and have to say that I really love it (for what it does ~ sits on the counter and delivers me content that I care about)…  I think that’s what is so cool about this device:  It can be as basic or as advanced as you want it to be.

With that said, I’ve been really wanting to create a few Chumby widgets that would help me out (details at some point in the future), but there is a barrier to entry for development on this device that I’m bumping my head on.  You see, all of the widgets that run on the Chumby are created within Flash.  I’m sure it’s not hard to work with and there are a bunch of samples floating around to help you get started in development.  The issue is that I don’t know much about Flash other than it costs much more money (than the Chumby itself!) to develop applications on it.

I have seen a handful of open source/free Flash development utilities but cannot figure out for the life of me how to use any of them.  From what I’ve found, every one of them is missing “something”… So I ask you folks out there who may be doing Chumby development or Flash development:

“What’s the best software application to do basic Flash/Flash Lite 3 development (without spending ‘much’ money)?”

Any help would greatly be appreciated!
