Let’s go back 4 years to the last World Cup
The 2006 World Cup kicks off this Friday and I’ve been doing a bit of reminicising.
Let’s rewind to 2002. I was struggling looking for a new job while working at a dying dotcom (I would link, but there’s nothing to link to… For the record, it was divine.com). Every day you wondered if your keycard would let you in the door (they let several people go that way ~ usually the ones that didn’t have laptops they were toting around so I actually felt confident that I could at least get in the door)…
What did I do with my time between searching for a job and surfing around the internet, you ask?
I followed the World Cup. Religiously.
I watched every game I could through the streaming play-by-play interface (MatchCast as I just learned from a post of mine from June 2nd, 2002). I listened to every game that was streamed over the internet whether it was through the BBC or any other stations. Of course I watched any matches that I could that were broadcast on tv when I was at home (this was pre-Tivo ~ per a post of mine from June 4th, 2002)…
It’s going to be interesting to follow this year’s World Cup. While things were “online” back in 2002, a lot has changed. We now have blogs where anyone watching a match (whether in person or watching from the local pub that happens to have a wifi connection) can report right alongside the BBC or ESPN. We now have podcasts where people with a portable mp3 recorder can be in the stands interviewing fans and giving their commentary on the day’s matches.
I’m really hoping I have some time to get into the matches like I did back then. I had a lot of fun following things. Too bad there’s a stricter dress code where I’m at now. Part of the fun going to work was seeing who was sporting what national team jersey each day. :)
