Free Self-Guided Tour of Chicago’s Millenium Park (via mp3)

According to a story on Gapers Block today, you can go on a self-guided tour of Chicago’s Millenium Park by downloading an audio tour in mp3 format and using your favorite portable mp3 player to guide you through the sites. Kind of a neat idea (especially since it’s a free download)…

This reminds of something I’ve heard Adam Curry talk about in the past where people could create their own guided tours of cities and attractions and allow users to be able to download these files and use as a “guided” tour. I guess this idea is similar to a SoundSeeing Tour, but would be used more for actually guiding a tour than listening to someone picking up the sounds of an area.

I like it.

For a little more on this you might be interested in checking out this episode of Rocketboom from a few weeks back… they talked to the professor (and a couple of his students) who created art museum podcasts/audio guides for the MOMA in NYC. Cool stuff.

We’re starting to do this in two places:

    1. OttawaPodcasts.com

    2. CityPodcasts.com

City Podcasts is designed to be just like what you’re talking about only for multiple cities. We’re grabbing thoughts from individuals on what tourists should see when they come into their city and branching it from there.

The OttawaPodcasts.com site is specific to Ottawa but hopes to encourage other cities to do the same.
