The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time?
The new Rolling Stone actually has a “music related” story that made the cover this week: The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time (compared to last weeks “Olson Twins” cover story)…
So Rolling Stone is finally talking about music again and they come out with a list like this? Now I’m a fan and have much respect for Jack White of the White Stripes, but I do not think he deserves to be placed at #17. Same goes with Kurt Cobain at #12. What’s that all about? Even “I” can play power chords and I’m not on that list? How does a Kurt Cobain beat an Eddie Van Halen (who came in at #70!)?
Where’s Bob Dylan on this list or Tim Reynolds (of Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds fame)?

Rolling Stone has once again proven itself obsolete and musically inept…Whatever they say, just assume the opposite is true.
Johnny Ramone didn’t even learn to play until his fourth or fifth album…And I’ve seen him admit that in video footage.
If you’re looking for really cool views on music past and present check out The Legends of Classic Rock, which is produced by Jeff Woods of Q107 in Toronto. (q107.com)
Alan Cross is another Canadian who does a very widely-syndicated radio show called “The ongoing History of New Music” (edge.ca to listen online)
I would take both over any drivvel that Rolling Groan puts out.

I don’t give a shit what anyone says the top two seeds are a fight between Jeff Beck and Jimmy Paige. I know eyebrows are gonna raise with the mention of Jeff Beck, either you don’t know him or you’re not fond of his music. But if you listen to it from a technique, diverse and skillfull point of view he blows all others away. I’m so sick and tired of Beck not getting the attention he most certainly deserves. Don’t judge me the wrong way because I’m talking about guitarists and I haven’t even mentioned Jimi Hendrix. He is an insane guitarist and an icon to most but my opinion when I’m listening to his music and I’ve heard alot it’s like he over does and goes overboard and some of it is just like he’s going out of control. Yeah I’ll admit he did come up with some crazy sounds but that’s all they were to me and another thing you have to take into consideration is he was pretty much the first guitarist to come around playing in the league of the later Paige, Clapton and Beck. So when older people go back and think of good guitar work they think of their earliest memory of it, Jimi Hendrix. But just because the person is the first of something does not mean their the best. It does make them unique though. Like I said before I think he’s great but not the best. Alot of people also dropped acid listening to him which most likely heightened the flow. He didn’t play a guitar with a bow and he was not the fastest guitarist. Those are a first and best but not really noted even though they should be. I think the reason why people think Hendrix is the best is because he was one of the first and most people don’t know much about the guitr or older music and go with whatever everyone else says. The reason I think Jeff Beck is the best is because I have never heard anyone play as fast as him, or be apart of a band for so long with no lyrics relying completely on music with a straight guitar solos through his entire songs and albums, and he’s got some very interesting and daring sounds in his work. He’s not the most commercial of artist but throughout the entire history of any kind of art the true greats are usually not recognized at first in their life (Stanley Kubrick)or sometimes at all (Van Gogh). Well in case you read if you get a chance give him a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

Eddie Van Halen is my fav. He has a wicked style, he undoubtedly has some skill, and he is an amazing musical composer. His skill goes beyond raw skill and into creativity. Also, he is very musically diverse. EVH Owns all.
