Gnomedex Day 2 (Afternoon)
Tim O’Reilly is on stage right now… I’m completely captivated right now…
There are a lot of good topics he is speaking about:
- “Linux has no good applications”… What about Google, Amazon.com, etc?
- Microsoft has a several year gap between software releases, Amazon is updated how often?
- “Usenet: the real mother of open source”
- “The Adhocracy”: like-minded developers can find each other and work in ever-shifting groups
- Software development teams can be distributed, even internationally
- Users help build the application (IMPORTANT)
- ASP.NET was created by the ASP folks at Microsoft when they had six weeks off between projects… They wanted “to rebuild ASP the right way” (XML)… Mr. Gates found out and the next thing, it’s the official Microsoft release.
- More people have contributed to Amazon than to Linux. Amazon is using it’s users to build their application…
- Amazon has millions of people working for them.
- IBM is not enabling their competitors with Websphere.. When you sell SAP, you sell Oracle… Websphere is everything in one (either IBM-Based or OpenSource).
- Hydrid for real-time collaboration
- “Software Above the Level of a Single Device”
- “The future is here, it’s just not evenly distributed yet.” -William Gibson
Tim was easily the best speaker so far… Wow.
