Another El story this morning…
Another El story this morning…
So I get up onto the platform at my local El Stop and it is just packed… I think sometimes, the people driving the trains in the morning are on break somewhere because there will be not a train in site and then all of a sudden about 5 come in a row… (Either that or they always break down North of my stop and they all get backed up?)
Anyways, a train finally comes and of course everyone is jamming into it. I have grown to the point where I don’t need to push myself onto a train (side note, have you ever seen in Japan how they have “white-gloved” platform attendees that help pack the trains by pushing people in?). This train goes and then the platform has a little more breathing room.
So I’m looking down the tracks to see if another train is coming and this girl is there juggling a gigantic latte, a newspaper, sunglasses and a book… I’m just watching her trying to manage all of this. It was quite fascinating because I noticed that everyone was watching this chick try to manage everything. So she is getting everything taken care of (almost) and at once loses everything (she did hold on to the coffee since it was probably the most expensive!).. The sunglasses fall onto the floor of the platform, the newspaper just opens up and practically explodes and the book goes flying onto the train tracks… This girl contemplates for about 5 seconds on how she can get down onto the tracks and get this book (if you’ve never seen the El tracks in Chicago, they are a good 4 feet below the height of the platform!)… Someone tells her, “You’re not going to get that book” and she finally just lets it go… I felt like I wanted to tell her that the book wasn’t good anyways, but didn’t get around to it… Myself and everyone really wanted to see the train hit the book and see it rip in half.. (the book fell in between the tracks so the train never made contact with it)
What’s the moral of the story here?
a.) Get a bag to carry all your crap in…
b.) You never need that many reading materials in your hands at one time…
c.) Don’t even think about crawling onto train tracks…
So that was my excitement of the day! (not too exciting I know.. you had to be there!) :)
